Smt Sahana Banerjee

Sahana Banerjee is one of the most accomplished and outstanding female sitar players of India. Belonging to the Rampur Senia Gharana, Sahana was born in a family of rich musical heritage and was readily recognized as a child prodigy at the early age of 4. Her father, Professor Santosh Banerjee, was a celebrated sitar and surbahar player in India.

Additionally, Sahana received extensive vocal training from her mother, Chhabi Banerjee—daughter of Sangeetcharya Kashinath Chattopadhyay of the Sahaswan Gharana.

She started her formal training with Khayal vocal lessons from her mother. Thereafter, she received lessons in the Beenkar Dhrupad style on the Sitar. With her talent and total submission to music, she not only mastered the 2 forms but also found her own unique way to blend Dhrupad and Khayal in her playing in the most aesthetic of ways. Sahana maintains a tight balance between Gayaki and Tantrakari.

On one hand, her command over the left hand techniques gives her the power to produce Melodious Meends, Robust Gamaks and Fluid Taans and on the other, she has a right-hand stroke that is unique in its tone, determined in voice and varied in complexity. The totality of this experience immediately attracts the attention of the audience and leaves it mersmerized throughout the duration of a recital.
